Pondering how Cinderella would react
We attended a workshop by the Zoo, Arts & Parks of Salt Lake County (ZAP) to delve into what we have never done in our 10 years with Story
Crossroads. Before we reveal it, we brainstormed different fairy tale characters. We wondered how these characters would react to the every-day needs of Story Crossroads. When Cinderella had much taken away from her, she still discovered that her time and talents could help other creatures or people. Then, when fortunes turned for her, she gave even more back to people as Queen of the Land. Could Cinderella and other fairy tale characters be models to help us figure out our first annual campaign letter? Yes, mailed letters are still a thing...but we have never done it before. Not even an email version. Yes, we have done Facebook Fundraisers or encouraged GiveLively. This is new territory. But we don't want to say, "It's the end of the year...give to us!" That's dumb. We know that Story Crossroads has much more exciting ways to show you the impact we have had on the community and on individuals. Perhaps you are one of those people. Nothing is released yet in regards to this annual campaign. We're providing the anticipation of how we could story-ify this project.
A Training that Turned into an Invite
During our September Story Crossroads Board Meeting, Mikaela Holmes had the idea that all of us Board Members could have a refresher or training on all of the current programs held year-round. Then, what started as an insular meeting transformed into an invite to anyone curious. We knew this could lead to
potential Board Members, Volunteers, and International Ambassadors. This could turn into an annual tradition of a Training/Invite. You can join our "Getting to Know Us - Story Crossroads" on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 7-8pm MDT (UTC -6) held through Zoom...and it's
free. You can also pass along this opportunity to anyone who you think could enjoy learning about us. |
Exploring
Corporate Board Possibilities
We have met with a Business Banking Specialist this September. She scribbled down names as we shared stories of how we have helped the community.
She thought of many people to approach to get us to the next level. Maybe you are scribbling some ideas and contacts as well! We have a current Board
consisting mainly of Storytellers, Librarians, and Teachers. We are in need of the following: - Banker/Finance - who is active with arts and cultural events
- Lawyer Board Member - one who works with Nonprofits and appreciates the Arts
- CPA/Accountant - who works with arts nonprofits
- Mental Health Practitioner - ideal if familiar and/or uses Narrative Therapy
- Human Resources - as we continue to plan for staff, interns, etc.
- Strategic
Development
- International Relations
- Cultural Liaisons
Share with these people that they can join our "Getting to Know Us - Story Crossroads" on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 7-8pm MDT (UTC -6) held through Zoom.

On September 20, 2024...the "Flavored Fright" issue of came out for The Story Beast e-publication. This issue as well as all past issues can be found on The Story Beast website. We would love your submissions for our 2024 quarterly issues. We have an upcoming issue coming out September 15, 2024. Meanwhile, our next deadline for submissions is "Whirling Winds" ( due November 15, 2024). Though, we welcome any piece no matter if it links to the theme or not. While this is a different entity than Story Crossroads,
we are pleased to see this e-publication that is available for free for anyone and all over the world. All details can be found at storybeast.org. And...the Story Crossroads Executive Director happens to be the one that launched the idea and worked along amazing people to have it come to pass.
On September 2, 2024, we had our 4-year anniversary of our All Things Story virtual workshop series. We always hold the September workshop on Labor Day (United States) in honor of our first one with Simon Brooks. For the 2024 Labor Day, we had Kim Weitkamp who shared how to "labor" successfully in the
storytelling field. She was forthright and candid. Many participants said it was the best workshop they ever attended. Kim kept it real and packed it with practical and doable action items. This workshop and other past ones can be ordered at http://storycrossroads.org/AllThingsStory. On September 20, 2024, we had the delight of rescheduling the "Eclipsed: A Journey through Totality' program that was originally going to happen in April 2024. Yet, by having Nannette Guest Watts perform in September, we could start completely in the light to completely in the dark within the 1-hour performance. She gave an ode to her parents that blended in a lovely way with the traditional tales around the
world around celestial phenomena. You can explore past streams as well as the upcoming house concerts at http://storycrossroads.org/HouseConcerts.
As for future events, we have at least two every month. We have our "Getting to Know Us - Story Crossroads" virtual presentation (October 2). Vinita Dhondiyal
Bhatnagar will teach a virtual workshop (October 12). Bradley Mackay will be performing for our 85th House Concert (October 25).
