Connecting with Deaf Community
We have offered ASL since our inaugural festival in 2016 and have built rapport with the Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of
Hearing. In 2023, we had Pamela Mower from that Center present a "State of the Art" address about the past, present, and future of Deaf storytelling. For the 2024 Story Crossroads Summit & Festival, we will be featuring Peter Cook (award-winning Deaf storyteller from Illinois) as one of our featured story artists. This inspired working with the Jean Massieu School for the Deaf’s PTA to involve youth in signing stories so that Peter Cook and the youth can share the same stage in May. For
2025, we will continue this tradition of having Deaf youth tellers where both Hearing and Deaf audience members can enjoy the stories. We look forward to having regular meetings with representatives from the School and Center with interpreters to celebrate together.
Story Crossroads was selected to participate in the Zoo, Arts & Parks of Salt Lake County (ZAP) for their first Impact Collaborative Program cohort! Starting in May 2024 for six months, about 10-15 representatives from arts and cultural organizations will meet to learn from each
other and receiving training in the following: Fundraising and Development; Marketing and Communications; Financial and Legal Management. This allows Story Crossroads to continue in this new phase as we now have an Executive Director with a monthly stipend after 10 years of being volunteer-led. In fact, it's because of ZAP that we could transition to having a paid Executive Director. Given that Salt Lake County residents will again vote on ZAP’s renewal/reauthorization
this year, we wish for anyone in the area to vote "YES" for ZAP!

Experimenting with Trilingual Experience
While we have been bilingual for our Summit & Festival with English/ASL, we will attempt a trilingual experience of English/Spanish/ASL during our "Language of Story: Spanish" academic discussion livestream with Tomás Hidalgo Nava, PhD and help from 5 Star Interpreting. This series explores
storytelling linguistics and folkloric symbols within the language. Back in 2016, we did have Spanish headsets while having English/ASL. Yet, on May 16, 2024, this will be so everyone can hear the English first with Spanish voiced and ASL signed simultaneously. Depending how this goes will determine future Summit & Festival plannings. We have featured so far: American Sign Language, Portuguese, German, Hungarian, Korean, Tongan. In 2024,
we will add Spanish. For 2025, we will add Swahili that's spoken in 14 countries with 2,000+ people in Utah who actively speak it.

The Story Beast e-pub - next issue on March 15
Each issue of The Story Beast e-publication has a theme that people can connect to...or not. All past issues can be found on The Story Beast
website. We would love your submissions for our 2024 quarterly issues. We have upcoming themes for 2024 such as "Chaotic Creations" ( due May 15, 2024); "Flavored Fright" ( due August 15, 2024); and "Whirling Winds" ( due November 15, 2024). While this is a different entity than Story Crossroads, we are pleased to see this
e-publication that is available for free for anyone and all over the world. All details can be found at storybeast.org. And...the Story Crossroads Executive Director happens to be the one that launched the idea and worked along amazing people to have it come to pass.
On February 3, 2024, Pam Faro guided us through movement and internal imagery and how to apply these skills in our storytelling. We had a meditation that even included more than sitting where many people had "ah-ha" moments. You can order this workshop as well as past recordings at http://storycrossroads.org/AllThingsStory (scroll to bottom). On February 20, 2024, we had "I Be a Witch" full-length feature film visionaries share how it came to be from a one-woman storytelling show. We loved having Lori and Omar Hansen as well as Cherie Julander. This was more a
fireside chat than a performance though loved how we could celebrate the blending of film and story. You can view this stream on YouTube or at http://storycrossroads.org/HouseConcerts.
As for future events, we have at least two every month. We have Paul Strickland teaching a 5-hour virtual workshop (March 1). Annie and Dan Eastmond a.k.a. Harvest Home will be
performing for our 80th House Concert (March 22).
